Strategy Chart: Dealer Stands on Soft 17

This is basic strategy for shoe games where the dealer stands on every 17, soft 17 included. Standing on soft 17 is slightly better for the player than hitting it.

The chart

Find your hand on the left and the dealer's upcard along the top. If you hold a pair, use the pairs table first. If you hold an ace that counts as 11, use soft totals. Everything else is a hard total.

What changes when the dealer stands on soft 17

  • Hit 11 against an ace instead of doubling.
  • Stand on soft 18 (A,7) against a 2 instead of doubling.
  • Stand on soft 19 (A,8) against a 6 instead of doubling.
  • With late surrender, only surrender 15 against a 10, and 16 against a 9, 10 or ace. Play 15 and 17 against an ace normally, and split 8,8 against an ace.
